Brian Mueller, Grand Canyon University
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer
Our state’s signature landmark, the majestic and endlessly sprawling Grand Canyon, evolved from a desolate desert plateau into the natural wonder we celebrate today over a 70 million year span of uninterrupted erosion from the Colorado River and its tributaries.
Much like the Grand Canyon itself, Grand Canyon University (GCU) has forged a comparable path, emerging from modest, local beginnings into the thriving national university we all recognize today.
GCU was founded nearly 70 years ago in 1949 by the Southern Baptist Church. Known as Grand Canyon College, GCU’s first campus was in an abandoned armory building in Prescott. Two years later, Grand Canyon College relocated to Phoenix and began to establish a strong academic reputation.
Over the years, GCU evolved; ebbs and flows of success –and struggle– characterized the operation. With dwindling financial support and the realization that change was necessary, the university transitioned away from non-profit status in 2004 and sought a new business model to turn around operations. GCU embraced a new emphasis on enhancing curriculum and opportunities for working professionals, and by 2008, was ready for something bigger – and they found just the right man to lead the university in that direction: Brian Mueller.
We are honored to welcome back AzBL’s 2017 Award Recipient and the leader responsible for navigating GCU’s bold new path, Grand Canyon University President Brian E. Mueller, as our May 3rd speaker.
Since arriving to GCU in July 2008, Brian Mueller has led GCU to be recognized as a distinguished center of teaching, learning and scholarships, with an abundance of extracurricular activities including Division I sports programs.
Mr. Mueller’s background was a perfect match for the new challenge at GCU. With an accomplished background in higher education highlighted by teaching, marketing, enrollment, admissions, student retention, financial aid and academic affairs, he facilitated the next layer in GCU’s evolution.
Mr. Mueller earned a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Concordia University and began his higher education career as a professor in the Concordia University system. Prior to joining GCU, Mr. Mueller was President of Apollo Group, Inc., the parent company of the University of Phoenix, in addition to serving other roles including Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President.
Mark your calendars for May 3rd to join AzBL as we hear from this remarkable Valley business leader and learn more about Mr. Mueller’s ambitious vision to use education as an instrument for positive change in our communities. Nearly 70 years in the making, the time is now for GCU!
