Craig Hughes, Total Transit

Chairman & Founder

The taxicab business remained the same for over 100 years in pretty much the same fashion. The arrival of Uber, and other transportation network companies (TNC’s), has significantly disrupted the industry, and done so in a very short time frame, changing it forever.

What is it like to be a part of such a significant change in business? How do you adjust and survive? How do you face down all that disruption? AzBL has those answers, and more, as we welcome Craig Hughes, Chairman and Founder of Total Transit, Inc., Thursday, February 8, 2018.

Total Transit, Inc. is the holding company for Total Transit Enterprise, which consists of Discount Cab and their entire public transit division and the technology company, Veyo, a next-generation medical logistics company based in San Diego.

Ten years ago, Hughes and Discount Cab set forth the goal to make Discount Cab one of the top five cab companies in the country. In 2013 they successfully achieved that goal, with the busiest call center in the nation, dispatching 16,000 trips a day in Arizona – and keep in mind cities in Arizona are not “cab cities” like New York, Chicago or San Francisco.

That achievement didn’t mean much in the face of unprecedented disruption to their business model by TNC’s like Uber and Lyft. The company made the strategic purchase of a small technology company in San Diego and developed a system to compete with the TNCs. This company evolved into Veyo, which now has hundreds of millions in sales and is disrupting the medical transportation brokerage business, much like TNC’s disrupted the taxi business.

Remember to mark your calendar for Thursday, February 8, 2018 to be a part of this evening with a long-time Arizona Business Leader. Hughes will share with AzBL attendees, lessons learned while taking a very small business, in an industry that was, by all accounts pretty dull, and transforming it to the dynamic giant it is today. These lessons learned and more are featured in his recently published book, “The Self-Driving Company.” Hughes will also talk about the importance of being a values-based company, giving back to the communities responsible for your success, and his philosophy as a business owner to get out of the organization’s way and focus on creating a believable vision for the company. This is a presentation you don’t want to miss.
